Sonam

Sonam, the Queen of Telia, was the most dominant of the famous Telia Sisters. Born in 2011 to Waghdoh and Madhuri, she ruled the prime Telia Lake territory for over a decade before being displaced by her niece Collarwali. She passed away in early 2025 near the Irai Dam backwaters.

The tropical dry-deciduous forests of the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve were not meant for the weak. Here, beneath the scorching sun of the Deccan Plateau, the right to live was written in blood. This was the world into which our main character, Sonam, was born in 2011.

She was a cub of royal, albeit brutal, lineage. Her father was Waghdoh, a colossal, battle-scarred titan known to the local guides as "Big Daddy". Just months before Sonam's birth, Waghdoh had violently conquered the Moharli core zone, killing the previous cubs of Sonam's mother, Madhuri. Madhuri, a resilient tigress who would eventually become the "Super Mom" of Tadoba, had no choice but to submit to the giant.

From her mother, Sonam learned the quiet grace of the jungle. From her father, she inherited raw, unyielding power. Sonam was not alone; she shared her mother's warmth with three sisters—Mona, Geeta, and Lara. Together, they were the "Telia Sisters," named after the glittering lake that served as their childhood playground. Even as a cub, Sonam stood out. A distinct, natural "S" mark curved perfectly below the right side of her neck, marking her for destiny.

As the sisters grew into sub-adults, the ancient laws of the jungle dictated they must separate, find their own territories, and hunt alone. But Tadoba was crowded, its territories fiercely guarded by older, lethal tigers. Starvation loomed over the sisters.

In a remarkable display of survival, Sonam and her siblings defied millions of years of solitary feline instinct: they chose to stay together. They became a gang. Tourists and wildlife filmmakers watched in awe as the four inexperienced tigresses pooled their strength. Viswas, a seasoned local safari guide, would often hush his guests as the sisters synchronized their ambushes, taking down massive Indian Gaurs and formidable Sloth Bears—feats impossible for a lone young tiger. They were unstoppable, their unbreakable bond keeping them alive during their most vulnerable years.

But the sisterhood was only a temporary truce against nature. As Sonam reached her full physical prime, a deep, ancient fire ignited within her. She looked at the lush, prey-rich banks of Telia Lake and decided she would share it with no one.

Sonam was the most aggressive and dominant of the sisters. In a heartbreaking but inevitable turning of the tide, the very gang that had hunted together now turned its claws upon each other. Sonam systematically fought and chased away Mona, Geeta, and Lara, and eventually even drove out her own mother, Madhuri.

Standing alone at the water's edge, indifferent to the convoy of tourist gypsies clicking their cameras, Sonam became the undisputed Queen of Telia. She would lounge brazenly on the metal roads, locking her piercing eyes with awe-struck humans, wearing her dominance like a crown.

A queen needs an empire, but to build a dynasty, she needs a consort. Enter Bajrang. Unlike her terrifying father, Bajrang was a massive, patient, and surprisingly gentle male who simply walked into the territory without starting a war.

Bajrang expanded his own domain specifically to encompass Sonam's paradise at Telia Lake. Their partnership was legendary. Together, they navigated the trials of the jungle. Sonam proved to be a fiercely protective mother, rearing multiple litters under Bajrang's watchful, tolerant eye. Expert trackers like Shehnaz often guided breathless tourists to the waterholes just to catch a glimpse of Sonam emerging like a ghost from the tall grass, her cubs tumbling playfully behind her. She taught her young the harsh realities of life, swatting them when they misbehaved, molding the next generation of Tadoba's apex predators.

For over a decade, Sonam ruled. She outlived the average wild tiger by years, her legend growing with every passing summer. But time is the only enemy a tiger cannot defeat. By 2023, her reflexes had slowed, and her stamina waned.

The forest, unsentimental and cruel, provided a challenger. It was Collarwali—a young, muscular, lightning-fast tigress. In a tragic twist of fate, Collarwali was the daughter of Lara, making her Sonam's own biological niece. The battles at Telia Lake were earth-shattering. Sonam fought with every ounce of her battle-hardened wisdom, roaring into the afternoon sun to protect her final litter of cubs.

But youth prevailed. Bloodied and exhausted, the great Queen was finally ousted from the lake she had claimed from her own family all those years ago.

Exiled into the dangerous, human-dominated buffer zones, Sonam's final days were a quiet tragedy. Stripped of her territory and unable to hunt effectively, she wandered near the Irai Dam backwaters.

In early 2025, a devastating grassland fire swept through the area near Bhamdeli village, sparked by burning agricultural waste. When forest officials and veterinary experts, including Dr. Kundan Podchelwar, arrived to inspect the charred remains of a tiger found in the ashes, a profound sadness fell over the team.

Forensic analysis revealed a bittersweet truth: the fire had not killed her. The presence of burnt larvae proved she had passed away peacefully from old age, starvation, and battle wounds nearly 15 to 20 days before the flames ever touched her. Her claws and canines were intact; she had died on her own terms, untouched by poachers. Tissue samples were sent to the CCMB in Hyderabad for final DNA confirmation, but those who knew the jungle already knew the truth in their hearts.

The Queen was dead. But as the monsoon rains eventually washed away the ashes near Bhamdeli, Sonam's legacy lived on. Her bloodline still courses through the veins of dozens of tigers across the Deccan Plateau, her story forever etched into the whispering bamboo groves of Tadoba.
